A ceremony will be held to honor Officer Nicholas Vella, the fallen Huntington Beach police officer who tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash over the ocean on Feb. 19, 2022. The event, which will be presided over by Senator Janet Nguyen (R-Huntington Beach), aims to pay tribute to Officer Vella's service and sacrifice.

Senator Janet Nguyen introduced legislation (ACR 62) to create two freestanding signs on Beach Boulevard, dedicated as Officer Nicholas Vella Memorial Highway. The unveiling of the memorial highway sign is set to take place on the Beach Boulevard median near Pacific Coast Highway.

The ceremony will feature various notable figures, including Senator Janet Nguyen, Police Chaplain Roger Wing, representatives from the Police and Fire Departments, as well as local elected officials. The event is scheduled to commence on Friday, March 8, 2024, starting at 10:00 AM, with a flyover planned for 10:15 AM.

The staging area for the ceremony will be on the sidewalk in front of 21292 Beach Blvd., Huntington Beach. Parking will be reserved along northbound Beach Boulevard and near an apartment building.

This solemn occasion is an opportunity for the community to come together and remember Officer Nicholas Vella's service and dedication to protecting and serving the Huntington Beach community.
