Dr. Gabriela Mafi, Superintendent of the Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD), has been named the 2026 Woman of the Year for California’s 70th Assembly District by Assemblyman Tri Ta. Dr. Mafi leads GGUSD, which is marking its 60th anniversary this year and is known for academic performance.
Assemblyman Ta highlighted Dr. Mafi’s influence in education: “When I think of a woman making a lasting difference in our community, Dr. Mafi is the first person who comes to mind,” said Assemblyman Ta. “Her leadership has elevated academic achievement across Garden Grove Unified and strengthened opportunities for thousands of students and families. Under her guidance, the district has earned statewide recognition and continues to prepare students for success in college, career, and beyond.”
In response to the honor, Dr. Mafi stated: “I am honored to be recognized as Woman of the Year for the 70th Assembly District,” said Dr. Mafi. “Over the past 13 years as Superintendent, I have remained deeply committed to our district goals of ensuring that each student masters the academic and personal skills needed to experience lifelong success. I am so proud of our district’s achievements which demonstrate that the diverse and primarily immigrant families we serve are realizing their American Dreams through their children’s education.”
Under Dr. Mafi’s leadership, GGUSD has maintained high standards and accountability measures while working closely with teachers, staff, parents, and community partners throughout Orange County.

Dr. Mafi will be formally honored at an upcoming ceremony as part of an annual event by the California State Assembly recognizing women from across California.
