A bill to create the California Commission on the United States Semiquincentennial has passed the Governmental Organization Committee and is now headed to the Appropriations Committee. Senator Janet Nguyen (R-Huntington Beach) introduced SB 1214, aimed at coordinating celebrations for America's 250th birthday in 2026.
"Californians are patriotic when it comes to our history. We celebrate the Fourth of July every year and learn about George Washington and our founding fathers in school," stated Senator Janet Nguyen. "Winning the Revolutionary War against all odds was an incredible feat. Our nation had glorious celebrations to commemorate this in 1976, and I’d like to see California recognize this new milestone."
The bill proposes the establishment of a commission to plan and coordinate events surrounding the semiquincentennial, funded by private and federal resources. The commission will consist of 11 members, including the state archivist, legislators, members of the public, and a historian.
Rosie Rios, chairperson of the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, emphasized the importance of California's involvement in honoring the nation's founding. Rios urged the California Legislature to support Senator Nguyen's efforts in creating a dedicated commission for the 250th anniversary celebrations, highlighting California's rich history and diverse contributions to the nation.
Drawing a parallel to past efforts, the article mentions the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of California, established in 1967, which oversaw celebrations leading up to the bicentennial in 1976.
With the bill advancing through the committee process, California is one step closer to coordinating and commemorating the significant milestone of America's 250th birthday in 2026.
