WASHINGTON, D.C. - On April 28, Rep. Michelle Steel (R-CA) released a statement after President Yoon Suk Yeol’s address to a joint session of Congress. Rep. Steel, a first-generation immigrant from Korea, was instrumental in inviting President Yoon to the United States.

“As a proud first-generation American, I am honored to bridge the gap between Korea and the United States and strengthen our ties with such an important ally,” said Steel. “Together, we have the ability build mutually beneficial economic trade agreements that will significantly grow both of our economies. Korea is also a vital partner in promoting peace in the region and countering the aggression of North Korea. I look forward to continuing to strengthen the friendship between our two nations. We are stronger together.”

Background

Rep. Michelle Steel’s parents fled communism in North Korea to South Korea, where she was born. Rep. Steel grew up in Japan and immigrated to the United States with her family when she was 19 years old.

Rep. Steel sent a letter to President Yoon welcoming him to the United States, applauding his willingness to improve relations between the Republic of Korea and Japan, and encouraging trilateral relations with the United States. As the world faces unprecedented threats from North Korea, Russia, and the Chinese Communist Party, it is more important than ever to look past historical disputes and work together for global peace.
