In the latest congressional spending package signed by President Joe Biden, several Orange County projects are set to receive funding, impacting various aspects of the community. The funding allocation for these projects was a result of requests made by Orange County lawmakers. Most notably, Orange County’s congressional delegation secured nearly $65 million for local projects, with the exception of Rep. Katie Porter, D-Irvine, who abstained due to her views on earmarks.
Health initiatives in Orange County will benefit from the funding, including a substantial amount of $3.4 million allocated for opioid prevention efforts. This funding will be utilized to enhance prevention, education, and intervention services related to opioids in local communities.
Water infrastructure in the county is also a focus of the funding, with approximately $8.4 million earmarked for projects such as the Orange County Water District’s PFAS treatment plants. These plants are crucial for removing harmful chemicals from local well water, ensuring the safety of drinking water for residents.
Addressing homelessness, a significant concern for Orange County residents, the funding includes support for projects like the development of additional units at the Center of Hope, a permanent supportive housing complex in Anaheim. The Illumination Foundation will also receive funding to establish the Richard Lehn Intergenerational Campus in Santa Ana, providing housing and services for families and seniors experiencing homelessness.
Infrastructure improvements are a key part of the funding package, with the Orange County Transportation Authority set to receive a substantial amount for enhancing operations on state routes and completing projects like the Orange County Loop, a pedestrian path encircling the county.
The funding also extends to educational institutions in Orange County, with allocations for projects like the Titan Gateway Bridge at Cal State Fullerton and renovations at Santa Ana College to update campus buildings and support modern learning technologies.
Additionally, public safety projects are included in the funding, such as the remediation of hazardous materials and the restoration of the Fullerton Police Station, as well as planning and designing new amenities at Camp Pendleton.
Overall, the funding from the congressional spending package is poised to make a significant impact on various aspects of Orange County, ranging from healthcare and infrastructure to education and public safety.
