The U.S. House of Representatives has passed Rep. Michelle Steel’s legislation aimed at enhancing security cooperation between the United States and Taiwan. The bipartisan bill was incorporated into the FY 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which is the annual funding measure for the U.S. Armed Forces.
The Transpacific Allies Investing in Weapons to Advance National (TAIWAN) Security Act mandates that the U.S. Secretary of Defense enhance industrial base cooperation between the two nations. This initiative aims to strengthen the security alliance, promote defense supply chain security, and improve military readiness amid increasing military exercises by Communist China around Taiwan.
“The TAIWAN Security Act further solidifies America’s unbreakable alliance with Taiwan, a bright light for democracy in East Asia,” said Rep. Steel. “At a time when the Chinese Communist Party continues to threaten Taiwan’s security, it is crucial for America to stand up for the values of freedom and democracy and against the CCP’s campaign of aggression. I’m proud to be a strong and effective voice for defending Taiwan and promoting stability in the region, which was reflected by the inclusion of my legislation in the NDAA.”
The House version of the NDAA also includes provisions to boost salaries for military personnel, including a nearly 20% pay raise for junior enlisted servicemembers. Additionally, it addresses measures to counter Communist China’s espionage activities while increasing support for Israel amidst their conflict with Hamas.
