WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following escalating tensions in the South and East China Seas, Rep. Michelle Steel (CA-45) is urging Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to adopt a more assertive stance toward the Chinese Communist Party’s repeated violations of international maritime law.
In a letter to Secretary Austin, Steel called for increased U.S. action in coordination with regional allies, citing recent acts of aggression by the CCP against the Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Malaysia. These actions include attacking Philippine soldiers, disrupting energy procurement efforts by Vietnam and Malaysia, and intercepting a Taiwanese fishing boat.
“The United States must step up in the South China Sea and work with our allies to deter the CCP’s ever-evolving tactics. The current situation requires a strong and unified response with our Indo-Pacific allies to uphold international law, maintain territorial integrity, and ensure such acts of aggression do not go unchecked,” stated Steel's letter.
